It has about 54 km long (north-south) by at most 18 km wide (east-west) to the north, with a total area of 424.4 km ².

Most of the city of Florianópolis (97.23%), the state capital, is located on the island of Santa Catarina. The city center is in the Midwest, with several neighborhoods and districts distributed in the rest of the island: the neighborhoods of Bunker, Big Creek, Itacorubi, Pantanal, Parque São Jorge, Santa Monica and Trinidad (where is the UFSC) located in the center of the island. To the northwest are Santo Antonio de Lisboa, Cacupe, Sambaqui, Barra Beach Sambaqui and Daniela. In the north are the towns of British, Canasvieiras and Jurere. In north-central Ratones, Vargem Great and Small Vargem. In the northeast the Red River. In eastern Barra da Lagoa, Lagoa da Conceição Tavares Rio and Campeche. In Southeast Morro das Pedras and Easel In southern South Marsh Swamp and South Coast Inside. In south-central Costa de Cima. In the southwest Caieira Barra do Sul and Ribeirão da Ilha.

The island is the largest of an archipelago consisting of more than 30 islands, most islands belonging to the municipality of Florianópolis. The island of Santa Catarina is connected to the mainland by three bridges, the bridge Hercílio Light, Colombo Salles Bridge and Pedro Ivo Campos Bridge. These bridges are due to have a channel about 500 feet wide and up to 28 meters deep. The strait formed names a continental city neighborhoods and delimits the South and North bays.

The dunes separating the British Santinho are another must-see natural attraction. Ali is practiced sandboarding, a sport created in Florianópolis, which consists of sliding down the dunes on a board, doing tricks or not. To practice, just have equlíbrio and rent a board. Those looking for a different outing can go through the riding a little over four miles of dunes. Just do not forget to bring bottled water to hydrate. In terms of infrastructure, British offers several options for lodging and meals. The service sector is also a strong point. In most establishments can rely on attendants who speak Spanish. Historical curiosity: With the mass migration from the Azores to the city between 1747 and 1756, the difficulties of access to more remote locations led the government to decentralize power by dividing the island into parishes, which later give rise to intendências. English was part of the Parish of St. John the Baptist of the Red River, founded in 1831, and the name of the beach due to an English ship that ran aground there. There are two hypotheses for the fate of the ship. The first says that he floated and went his way, leaving some crew members on the island. The other says he was shipwrecked.
