Florianópolis and Santa Catarina Island Florianópolis is the capital of the state of Santa Catarina and one of three islands-capital of Brazil. It stands out for being the Brazilian capital with the best human development index (HDI), the order of 0.875, according to a report released by the UN in 2000. This index also becomes the fourth Brazilian city with the best quality of life, behind only the cities of São Caetano do Sul and Águas de São Pedro, in the state of São Paulo and Niterói (RJ). [5]

Located in the central-eastern state of Santa Catarina and is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. Much of Florianópolis (97.23%) is located on the island of Santa Catarina, and has about 100 beaches, and considered as the mainland.

It has, according to the IBGE in 2009, a population of 408,161 inhabitants, making it the second most populous county in the state, behind only Joinville.

The island of Santa Catarina is the municipality of Florianópolis and is located in the Atlantic Ocean, on the south coast of Brazil, in the center of the coast of the State of Santa Catarina, between latitudes 27 � south and 48 � west longitude. It has about 54 km long (north-south) by at most 18 km wide (east-west) to the north, with a total area of 424.4 km �.

Most of the city of Florianópolis (97.23%), the state capital, is located on the island of Santa Catarina. The city center is in the Midwest, with several neighborhoods and districts distributed in the rest of the island: the neighborhoods of Bunker, Big Creek, Itacorubi, Pantanal, Parque São Jorge, Santa Monica and Trinidad (where is the UFSC) located in the center of the island. The island is the largest of an archipelago consisting of more than 30 islands, most islands belonging to the municipality of Florianópolis. The island of Santa Catarina is connected to the mainland by three bridges, the bridge Hercílio Light, Colombo Salles Bridge and Pedro Ivo Campos Bridge.
